House Alars

A House Reborn

History

Alars was the seventh child of King Dios. He had a lot of trouble with his older brothers, and developed a knack for finding ways to turn them against each other so they would leave him alone.

As he grew into manhood, he turned to sorcery, developing powerful magics which intertwined with the powers of the Logrus, then set forth into Shadow to experiment with them. After many adventures, he returned to the Courts, and created Alarsways, and became one of King Dios' chief diplomats.

His descendents prospered for many centuries, gradually coming into alliance with House Darios and House Helgram in opposition to the policies of King Ishmael, which they tended to see as too secular. (And not favorable enough to themselves.)

A century ago, House Alars suffered catastrophe upon catastrophe. One of the old enemies of the House, Anthy, fell into its hands, only to be rescued by a force of destruction, Princess Jacqueline of Amber. This set in train the events which lead first to the devastation of Alarsways by Hiko which slew much of the House, then to Lord Alars quest for revenge, which eventually lead to his death at the hands of Morgan.

This left House Alars a shattered wreck, its future in the hands of a sixteen year old girl and her mother, Lady Kodachi, wife of the now fallen Lord Malar of Alars. Most of the house had little regard for her (although they didn't dislike her either) before this crisis, as she seemed simply a plant-obssessed shadow dweller Lord Malar had found in Shadow, though she was certainly good at pumping out children.

She surprised them all with a talent for politics, successfully reforging weakened ties with House Helgram, and winning the support of the Bride of the Dragon for House Alars. She's also successfully guided the house to abandon its old anti-Amber policies and gained royal favor for the first time in centuries. House Alars came to possess a Unicorn Spikard, a Patternblade, and the Heart of Flame, and finally got its Logrusfoil back as well. She and her brother covered themselves with glory in the war in the eyes of their house as well. And finally, she became rather intimate with Lord Loewen in the wake of the victory over Hel.

Lady Kodachi has since married Lord Loewen and moved to House Helgram, leaving Talia to rule over House Alars, which has prospered this past century under her rule.

Alars has gone on to lose or trade most of the artifacts it won, although it retains its Logrusfoil and acquired a dragon spikard and the Balance Sword Covenant.

Lady Alars

Died in the Logruswrack
Now a hundred and sixteen at the time of her death, Lady Talia was a stubborn woman who did not easily listen to advice. Her instincts were generally fairly good, but many feared this trait would lead her to disaster some day. Instead a completely unrelated disaster took her life. She was a noted sorceress and logrus master, and had great respect for anyone skilled in the mystical arts. She bore the Heart of Flame since Hiko's death and her mother's moving to House Helgram, although she unhappily surrendered it to Asuka upon her unveiling as the new Child of Fire.

Lady Talia had carefully built ties with Helgram, Nurgal, and Suroth, and was married to Lord Xaemyl of Suroth. It was not a very happy marriage, as neither of them liked each other very much, but they did seem to work together well when not squabbling. It was generally rumored that both of them are having affairs. During the Wrack, both went berserk and killed each other.

House Aptitudes

House Alars has long been noted for its skills of intrigue and their ability to winkle out people's secrets, as well as some skill at sorcery. Though such intrigues backfired rather hideously on the late Lord Malars...

House Geography

Alarsways is a collection of giant cogs, dozens of miles across, which interlink at various angles to form a giant clockwork. Each has its own gravity, while if you get very high off them, there's no gravity at all. Each is inhabited on both sides; the cogs range from thick forests to deserts to mountains to large cities.

Alarsways Palace sits at the center of the largest cog, and is an eight pointed star in shape, with wings radiating from a central dome. It is surrounded by gardens, with a large lake in one corner of the cog for boating and fishing.

Notable Alarsians and Residents of Alarsways

Allen von Munchausen

Deceased

Allen von Munchausen has his own page.

Lord Atleby

Noted braggart and teller of tall tales, Lord Atleby has gained new respect for his role in the battle of the Day of the Dead. Married to Yuki of Frostspire, he is a notable author of such works as 'How I Saved the Universe', 'The Entirely True History of Munchausenways', 'Places not to visit in shadow unless you want to die', and 'Oracles You Shouldn't Ever Listen To'. He's also a Logrus master of some skill.

Lord Baruch

Solidly built, Lord Baruch is a tall, dark-haired man who looks much like his father, Lord Malars, but with his mother's eyes and hair color. He is Lord High Chamberlain of Alars. Quiet and thoughtful, he is a slow, but solid thinker.

He has now claimed the throne.

Lord Kunou, Marshal of Alars

Armed with a Logrusfoil, Lord Kunou is himself immune to the worst effects of it, being Lipunese in origin. Stiff, pompous, formal, he is also brave and honest and tries to be just. He is debatably the strongest warrior of House Alars (Lady Yuki may well claim that honor).

Lady Suu

Younger sister to Talia, Suu is the Artificer of Alars, a master craftswoman of mystical and mechanical artifacts. She is also one of the Seven Talons of the Dragon, bearer of Hoard of the Dragon, which she forged herself. She is wife to Prince Touga of Amber, and mother to Aburatsubo and Haru. She spent a while trapped in Mecha-Alarsways, but is now up to her usual round of tricks.

Lord Xaemyl

Died in the Logruswrack

Lord Xaemyl was consort to Lady Talia, one of the elder children of the current Lady Suroth. He was reknowned for his skill at demon-form combat, especially the use of his prehensile tail with poison stinger; it resembled a humanoid scorpion. He was known to be a quarrelsome man, and he and Lady Talia fight a lot. One of these fights, the result of the Wrack driving them berserk, proved the death of them both.

Lady Yuki of Frostspire

Lady Yuki was once a Miko of Frostspire; now she serves the River Serpent, Serpent of Water. She is one of the premiere water elementalists known to exist, and is also debatably the strongest warrior of House Alars. She is also wife to Lord Atleby and mother to Allen von Munchausen.
