Phone hate
I hate hate phones. Hate hate hate hate them. I always
feel like such a fool when I'm talking to empty air with a piece of plastic
stapled to the side of my head. And worse, I find I'm constantly stuttering
or stammering, deprived of my normal use of body langauge to help convey my
thoughts. I pace. Put a phone in my hand and I'll wander anywhere
and everywhere, without thinking. How I long for conversational telepathy.
That said, the job hunt goes fairly well. Sent out a bunch of resumes and
had a couple more conversations with various recruiters. Hopefully something
will turn up soon.

Ghosts of Mars
Please, for the love of all you consider holy, don't go waste your money to
see Ghosts of Mars. That's $8 and 2 hours I will never reclaim in my life.
I'm warning
you now so you don't make the same dreadful mistake I did.

XHTML and other oddities
I just spent the morning prodding the rest of the site into shape, after
being unable to sleep until almost 7am. But as a result, all my HTML and
CSS code is all HTML4.01 valid. Except, of course, my frameset. Because
the frameset definition doesn't define the "framespacing" or
"border" attributes, and none of the "compliant" browsers out there
will draw a frame without a border without those two non-standard
attributes. Aren't standards lovely?
Once I gave up and decided to just be non-compliant so my design would look
right, I started looking at the XHTML 1.0 specification, mostly out of curiousity. My
first thought was "wow, they're finally going to force people to write
proper HTML, with close tags and everything." My pedantic sensitivies
preened and glowed, life is good. Then I started to look at the proposals
for XHTML 1.1. Eliminating all attributes, and making them parts of CSS so
that style truly is seperated from content. Hooray! And then it dawned on
me. This is great, but the mechanisms they've choosen mean that no one but
a fool, a pedant, or an utter freak like me is ever going to be able to
write a proper XHTML 1.1 document. People will be forced to use some form
of editor which deals with the pedantic details of getting all the selector
ids, neurotically precise tag definitions, and niggly details of applying
correct styles right. And I can't even decide if that makes me happy or sad.

First log entry
Well, I just spent 2 hours whipping together some shell scripts, and I should now have a more or less fully functional web log program. Yay! Or something.
