Dear Fellow Subscribers - I recently received a detailed, updated report from attorney Susan Gray in New York who has likewise been investigating Jeff Leach and his various "schemes". Susan has generally been focusing on the Egypt Revealed Expeditions tour that Jeff Leach canceled last August and has thus far refused to refund anyone's money on (to the tune of about $6,000.00 per person). I have mostly been focusing on the magazine subscriptions. We've both been gleaning as much information about Jeff Leach as possible and reporting the same to the authorities. Through Susan's persistence and recruitment of one Detective Wade in El Paso, Texas, much has been accomplished. Please read on and we will continue to keep you all updated as the situation progresses. And if you haven't already filed a complaint with the IFCC and/or Attorney General's offices of Texas and New Mexico, please do spend a few minutes and do so. The authorities are way too involved in matters since September 11th to help out with one or two $19.95 magazine subscriptions, but if everyone who had been affected by Jeff Leach's thievery were to file a complaint . . . . well at the 114 of you so far who have contacted me about this . . . that would be another thing! Best wishes, Lynne A. Positive developments have occurred in recent weeks, however, that continue to give me faith that Jeff Leach will be stopped and brought to justice. Here's what's new: 1. Internet Fraud Site: A number of you have filed complaints electronically on the FBI's website for reporting internet fraud. As Jeff offered both magazines for sale (some of which have never existed) and the trip on the website, this constitutes a federal crime as the goods/services were never provided. If any of you have not filed a complaint, I would urge you to do so immediately. You do not have to be a United States resident to register on this site. The more complaints that are filed, the more seriously the FBI will take this case. 2. FBI involvement: About a month and a half ago, I contacted the field office of the FBI in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As Jeff had moved to Silver City, NM by that time, my message was given to the local office in Los Cruces. In the meantime, I faxed the field office a number of documents, including the list of trip participants I received from Lindsay Gronich at Sun Travel, and correspondence between Jeff Leach and Quest Travel that demonstrated that the Egyptologists and Omar Sharif who were advertised as participants on the trip were never signed on. Two weeks ago, I received a call from Agent Scott Campbell who had been assigned to the case, as a result of both my phone call, contact by Detective Wade, and the number of complaints filed on the website. The good news is that the FBI has opened a file and is committed to prosecuting. Unfortunately, as the fraud occurred in Texas, the case is being transferred to the El Paso FBI office. A new agent will be assigned and each individual who has filed a complaint on the website will be contacted to give a statement. Agent Campbell told me that if I don't hear from a new agent by July 1 to call him. He did ask us to be patient, explaining that in the larger scheme of law enforcement, although what Jeff has done is both illegal and reprehensible, the resources of the FBI to pursue this type of crime have been limited since the events of September 11. 3. Texas Police involvement: Detective Ernest Wade of the El Paso police department has also been investigating Jeff and his activities. Det. Wade has been very helpful and supportive of our efforts. He has a meeting scheduled with the Texas State Attorney General's office this week to discuss the case, and it now seems likely that Jeff will face both federal and state charges. Det. Wade promised to keep me updated on the progress of the state case. 4. Bankruptcy of Egypt Revealed: Various rumors have been circulated, some by Jeff himself, that he will be filing bankruptcy on behalf of Egypt Revealed. This has not been confirmed, and it appears that no bankruptcy papers have been processed. 5. Contact from Jeff Leach: Approximately 2 months ago, I received a fax from Jeff himself asking me to send him my phone number and address (which he already had, as he sent me the fax at my office), so his "counsel" could contact me. I faxed back a letter with my contact information, stating that I would look forward to hearing from his attorney. I have not received any further communication from Jeff or any lawyer on his behalf. He also asked whether or not I was acting alone or representing a group. I did not respond to this comment, as I think this was his true purpose in writing to me. I'd prefer for him to think that we, as a group, are not "on" to him, so that he doesn't flee the country or take other actions which would make the FBI's prosecution more difficult. It appears that Jeff is living in or near Silver City, New Mexico and may be involved in setting up an internet company. I am attempting to keep tabs on his activities, and if anyone has any additional information, please send it along. I plan to inform as many people as I can of Jeff's past activities and the criminal investigation to prevent this type of fraud being perpetrated on others in the future. Jeff's involvement in the search for Amelia Earhart's crash site is at an end. I contacted Michael Kammerer, the individual who set up and funded the project, and informed him of Jeff's past. Jeff was then fired and literally thrown off the ranch where he had been living as Mr. Kammerer's guest. He (Jeff) will rue the day he crossed this red-haired attorney from Buffalo, New York! 6. Miscellaneous: I plan to contact the Internal Revenue Service to see if any action can be taken on Jeff's failure to file both personal and corporate returns for Egypt Revealed. 7. Refund of trip deposits: For those of us who paid by credit card, a claim can be made to dispute the charge as the goods and services promised by Egypt Revealed were not delivered. I was successful, although I had to argue with Key Bank that the 6 month period of time in which to file a claim should be extended (I paid in February of 2001). I would suggest the argument that Egypt Revealed has never officially cancelled the trip, nor have they filed bankruptcy. Therefore, the good/services still have not been provided and the filing time should be extended. I am also trying to obtain a refund of the travel insurance premium I paid to TravelSafe. This company has denied all claims, and is banking on the fact that a lawsuit to force payment would be costly and time consuming. I have written a letter of complaint to the Attorney General's office about their actions, but I expect little result. For those who paid by check, I fear there is no recourse against Jeff or Egypt Revealed as he most certainly has spent or hidden all funds obtained for the trip. You may be able to make a claim to any state Crime Victim's Compensation Board that might exist in your communities for at least a partial refund. 8. Living Well: ... is the best revenge. For those who are inclined, I would like to suggest a trip to Egypt next year. Imagine cruising down the Nile, past the temples and tombs, toasting our success and uttering an ancient Egyptian curse condemning Jeff to the Underworld. His heart certainly won't be free from sin!
