unofficial translation by Wei-Hwa Huang Ranma Manga #20 Last Update: 1/16/94 *The following is a non-literal translation of Ranma Nibunnoichi manga #20 *by Wei-Hwa Huang. Non-literal simply means that in many cases I have *translated certain phrases so that Americans may understand them better, *although I have tried to keep as much as I could. For example, certain *balloon texts have been switched around, because "Speaking of father,..." *"...where is going?" is much more awkward than "Where is..." "...father *going?" *although the former is closer to the actual Japanese.I have only translated *the balloon and narrative text; the sound effects, etc. are left as an *excercise to the other translators. :) If you have any questions, *comments, corrections, or proposed changes, e-mail me at * * whuang@cco.caltech.edu * *and I'll try to get it changed, as I know there's got to be many mistakes *here. It would also be nice that I get something if this translation is *used for profit, etc. (At least my name should get mentioned.) * *Actually, I want to make this translation as good as possible, so if *a section seems too awkward, please e-mail me and I'll update it. * *The legend is as follows: *Aside from the Last Episode Summary, Table of Contents, and Title Pages, *all text is preceded by two integers separated by a period. The first *integer corresponds to the page number (of the Shonen Sunday Comics release), *and the second integer corresponds to the panel number. Those unfamiliar *with Japanese manga panel sequences may find this a bit difficult, but the *sequence is approximately top to bottom, left to right, the former taking *precedence if the panels are wide, and the latter if panels are vertical. *(Just for the record, the former is more common in Rumiko comics.) If the *panel number is ambiguous (for instance, a character in panel 3 saying a *balloon in panel 1), the balloon location is the one that is used. * *Characters that should be known to readers of previous books are first *quoted by their full name, then a shortened version for the rest of the book. *Unnamed characters are denoted by "student, boy, girl, etc." New characters *are treated as unnamed characters until their name is revealed. Characters *whose name I couldn't figure out have a "?". What the chracter says in the *balloon is separated from the character's name by a colon. If what is in the *balloon is not actually said aloud by the character, the colon is prefixed *by a letter or word in quotes: *(n) : narration, the character is relating a story that is shown in the art. *(t) : thought, the character is thinking the statement. *(s) : sign, the character is holding up a sign that says this. *(f) : flashback, the character is in a flashback sequence. *(d) : dream, the character is in a dream sequence. *(i) : imagined, the character is in a daydream, imagined sequence, etc. *(m) : memory, the character is saying something that was said before * and is currently being recalled by someone else (perhaps incorrectly). *Some of these letters may be prfixed by a letter that stands for _who_ is *doing the dream, memory, imaginations, etc. * * And now, the translation... 133.Title: The Old man and the Plum Blossoms 134.1 Voice: Look, Gyoko (Dumpling). 134.1 Voice: It's like a sea of flowers... 134.2 Dumpling (Ranma): How pretty! 134.2 Dum: It's like the trees are blessing us... 134.3 Voice: Do... 134.3 Voice: ...do you still remember our promise, Dumpling? 134.4 Dum: Of course, Harumaki (Eggroll)... 134.4 Dum: When the plum blossom blooms... 135.1 Eggroll: Dumpling! 135.1 Dum: Eggroll! 135.4 Sign: Quiet! 135.6 Aka: Every night? 135.6 Ran: Um, the dream's grossing me out. 136.2 Hap: Good morning, Ranma! 136.4 Boy: Excuse me, miss... 136.4 Boy: Do you dream of this old man every night? 136.5 Ran: Oh! 136.5 Boy: You do? 136.6 Boy: Just in time... 136.6 Boy: Can we arrange a date? 137.1 Ran: Why should I date you?! 137.1 Boy: No, not with me... 137.2 Sign: General Hospital: Internals, Opticals,... 137.3 Ran: Who's this? 137.4 Boy: My grandfather. 137.4 Woman: My husband. 137.4 Doctor: My patient. 137.5 Doctor: He's been in borderline condition for two days. 137.5 Boy: Grandfather! 137.5 Woman: Hubby! 137.5 Ran: What's going on? 138.1 Eggroll's Soul: Dumpling, how I've missed you! 138.1 Ran: EEEK! 138.1 Aka: A ghost? 138.2 Boy: Don't be afraid.
