Special Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder... what *are* they up to?!

Scully walked into Mulder's office. She sighed as she looked around the room. As cluttered and messy as his office was, it still seemed empty. Mulder had been missing for months now, the search for him had become very slim and not many people spoke of him any more. As far as they were concerned, he was on "long service leave". Even her hope of ever seeing him again was waring thin. She gently picked up his name block and ran her fingers over the smooth metal, feeling each indent over the words "Fox Mulder". A tear came to her eyes; she let the tear fall gracefully down her cheek. She closed her eyes and allowed the thoughts of him fill her mind. Every time she was in his office, it made her feel a little bit closer to him. This was his world, his life, his dream and his truth.

"Agent Scully...?" A deep voice called from behind her. She turned around abruptly and Mulder's name block falls to the floor. Assistant Director Walter Skinner stood in the doorway of Mulder's office, holding a file of some sort.

"Sir?" She replied whilst trying to pick up the name block and wipe away her tears. She slipped the block in her pocket.

"I've got some news on Agent Mulder's whereabouts. We received a call from someone, he wouldn't tell us his name, but he seems pretty sure he knows his location... What do you think?" He handed the file to Scully.

"Are you ok, Agent Scully?"

She tried to force a smile. Her lips quivering, she spoke in a cracked, wavering voice "Sorry Sir, I'm a bit... It's been so long... I miss him... I don't know what to believe any more, I can't believe until I see him..." She coughed nervously and they both noticed how her hands were shaking.

Scully opened the file and flicked through it. Nothing out of the ordinary, same old, same old. Nothing new about what happened to Mulder. She stared blankly at the files, as if she was staring through them. She couldn't concentrate on the file, her mind was wandering, 'What if... What if this is it? I might be reunited with my partner, my friend, my...'

"Scully, look here..." Skinner pointed out the latest information of the "mysterious" man who had called about Mulder. "All he said was for you, he asked for you personally, to go to this address and wait by the bus stop."

Scully looked at him the puzzlement clear on her face, but nodded in agreement. "Agent Scully, please understand that this man might be dangerous or want other information about the X-Files, please don't let your feelings..."

"Sir, I understand" She interrupted Skinner and gave him a stern, yet sad look. "When does this 'mysterious' man want to meet me?"

"Noon tomorrow," he paused. He looked at Scully; the sadness in her eyes, her body language, she was exhausted. "Scully..." he said with a sympathetic voice. "...Scully, it's late you should go home and get some rest. You'll need it."

Skinner motioned Scully through the door. She took a deep breath and left Mulder's office.

Scully unlocked and pushed open her apartment door and closed it behind her. She stood there looking at her apartment. It looked so empty; but then again everything has seemed to be empty since Mulder had vanished. She looked at her watch; it was 9pm. She sighed and walked towards her bedroom. She placed her gun and phone on the table.

Totally exhausted from the day's work she flopped down on her bed. Her mind was racing, filled with thoughts and memories of Mulder. Thoughts of Samantha, wondering if he had the same fate as she did, whatever that was. Tears started to dwell in her eyes. She rolled over and tried to sleep.

Scully awoke. She walked towards the bathroom, still in the clothes she wore the day before. She turned the shower on. Seeing something out of the corner of her eye, she turns quickly and to see Agent Mulder standing just outside her window. Mulder, with sadness in his eyes, bruises and scars on his face and body, he just looks at her. With her heart beating fast, she called out his name.

"Scully," he calls softly. Reaching out his arms, he called her name again. "Scully... I need you..."

Scully started running towards the window, Mulder seemed to be getting further and further away with every step she took. She throws open the window, but he was gone. The breeze was cool on her face.

"Mulder" She screamed.

Her phone ringing awoke her. With a groan she stumbled out of bed and answered the phone.
"Agent Scully...?" Skinner asked softly. "I hope I didn't wake you, but we're due to leave shortly..."

"I thought he wanted to meet me?" Her throat was dry and croaky.

"He does, he won't meet me. I'll be in the car; I just want to watch over you. I want to make sure that you'll be ok, I'll pick you up in an hour."

They arrived at the bus stop, 12.20pm. Scully got out of the car and looked around, the road turned to dirt about an hour ago and all there was, was a bus stop, a phone booth and a seemingly abandoned gas station. Skinner drove off and parked around the back of the gas station. Scully took a seat and waited. Soon enough her watch turned to 12.30. She looked down the road, she could see for miles but nothing seemed to be coming down the road. Suddenly the pay phone rang and interrupted the silence. She stood up and cautiously answered the phone...

"Agent Scully? Agent Dana Scully?" A mans voice came on the other end, his voice was deep and harsh.

"Yes, who is this?" She asked curiously.

"I have some information for you, something you might find very interesting... It's about Agent Mulder."

"Who is this? What do you know?" her voice was now quite stern.

"There is a bus coming in 10 minutes. Get on the bus and stay on until the end of the line. Make sure you come alone. I will arrange a car for you when you're here."

Scully hung up the phone and looked around for Skinner. He was already on his way to meet her. She explained the phone conversation to him and she instructed him not to follow her. She will keep in contact with him. He agreed and left her at the bus stop.

The bus ride was even longer than the car trip. As Scully had fallen asleep in the car, she was not quite aware of where she was, or where she was heading. But she kept a watchful eye out for road signs. She was alone on the bus, apart from the driver, who seemed happy to just chat with her about his job and about the countryside.

"Well, this is the end of the line ma'am." he said cheerfully.

"Thank you" She replied as she stepped off the bus.

"Be careful"

Scully turned around and gave the bus driver a puzzled look, "Sorry?"

"This is no place for a young lady like yourself, ma'am" and with that, he shut the door and drove off.

She looked around she seemed to be in a small town, people going about doing their daily work, nothing unusual. Another pay phone rang. Thinking to herself, 'whoever he is, he doesn't seem to want me to know.' She picked up the phone.

"Open the phone book" He said sternly.

She picked up the phone book, the inside has been cut out, and keys sat in the niche inside.

"Take the keys. They're for the car behind you."

She turned around and saw a silver sedan across the road. As she walked across the road, she began to call Skinner to tell him where she was. BEEP BEEP BEEP, she tried again... BEEP BEEP BEEP. No reception. 'Damn phones'. She unlocked the car door and got in. Sitting on the passenger seat there was a white envelope addressed to 'Dana Scully'. She picked it up and opened it. There was a letter inside and a map.

I am sorry to do this to you, but I have to make sure they don't follow you. I can't let them know who I am. It's too dangerous. I do know where Fox Mulder is. I have interacted with him over the past few days. I too had been searching for him. But he came to me. He came to me in an "unfit" state. I took him to a hotel so he could rest. I would've contacted you earlier, but I had to be sure... Follow the map I have given you and you shall find him. Take care Agent Scully.

A friend.'

Her heart was beating faster, she felt this overwhelming happiness come over her. 'Is this true? Will I finally see Mulder again?' She started the car. Scully opened the map and tried to work out where exactly she was and where to go. It was starting to get dark, so she started to drive. Following the map, she noticed a car behind her. A black Ford sedan, tinted windows and the figure of a man in the driver's side. Being cautious, she took note of what the car did. The driver seemed to be following her at a distance; but then again, he might not be following her. Scully had no intention of losing her lead to find Mulder. Scully pulled the car over and tried to contact Skinner again, still no reception. The Ford drove past her, and the man stared at her. She didn't recognise the driver. Starting to drive off again, it seemed that the car just continued on his way. Relieved, she continued to follow the map. The roads were dark; there were no streetlights. The road soon turned into dirt, narrower. Without any more 'interruptions' with people following her, she arrived at the destination on the map. Scully pulled the car over, and got out. Reaching for her torch, she felt something hard and cool in her pocket. Pulling it out, she realised that it was Mulder's name block. Taking a deep breath she exchanges it for her torch. The night was cool, quiet and very still. She was in the middle of the countryside, with no streetlights or recognition of where she was, or where Mulder was.

Breaking the silence, her mobile rang. Startled, Scully answered. Hoping to find out where she was, but more importantly, where Mulder was.

"Scully" she stated.

"Ah, I see you have arrived at your destination. I must applaud you on your tactics of avoiding being followed. You see, that was me. I had to check to see what you would do. How you would handle being followed, being watched. Once again, Agent Scully, I am sorry to do that to you."

"Where is Mulder?" She questioned harshly.

"Patience, Agent Scully... All will be revealed."

'What the hell is going on?' Scully looked around; her eyes were slowly adjusting to the darkness. There she was, in the middle of nowhere, holding a torch and a phone. Suddenly from behind her came a loud crash. She spun around to see what the noise was. In the darkness stood the shadow of a man, climbing up out of a trap door. Quickly she grabbed her gun and shone the torch on the man.

The man was tall, with dark brown hair, of a medium build, seemingly to be in his late 30's. He appeared to be carrying a phone.

"FBI! Put your hands up and turn around. Slowly," she ordered.

"Dana, I am the one who called you," he replies, while obeying her orders.

"Lie on the ground" She called, seemingly ignoring his response.

The man obeyed.

"Who are you?" She questioned.

"That's not important, who I am. The important thing is, he's here... Your partner, Mulder."

"I can understand your caution and actions, but I'm telling you the truth, if you want to find him, you'll have to follow me." He said softly, compassionately.

"Get up, slowly."

The man stood up, and looked at her and smiled. She stared back at him. 'Who is this man? Where is Mulder?' The man motioned for her to follow. Still with the gun in hand, she followed him down the stairs.

The stairs were long very narrow. Barely enough room for one person, especially one of his size. He had to duck his head many times, to avoid hitting beams or rocks. Scully walked through the passageway quite easily. The man stopped, and reached into his pocket.

"What are you doing?" She asked, while cocking her gun.

Silence. The man pulled out a lighter from his pocket, and proceeded to light a torch, which was attached to the wall. The room, barely lit, was like a cave, something like an old mine. It had three metal doors and a couple of lamps, other than that it was empty. The man pointed to the middle door.

"Through there Dana."

Scully put her gun back into her holder and looked at the man. He had no expression on his face. Just staring at the door. She cautiously walked towards the door. Her heart was beating faster by every step, every breath, and every thought. The man followed her.

Silently, the man pulled something out of his pocket, a wet cloth. He leapt forward and clamped it over Scully's mouth and nose, holding her in an iron-like grasp. She struggled for a few seconds, then went limp.

Scully awoke, her head spinning. She was in a dark room her clothes had been removed and she was lying on something hard, smooth and cool. She could feel something around her toe and a thin cloth sheet covered her. Still feeling very groggy, she tried to sit up, but almost collapsed again.

"Hello?" She screamed.

No answer.

Suddenly, the lights turned on. Startled by the light, Scully fell back down and covered her eyes. Expecting to hit her head, her head landed on something soft, a pillow. She slowly uncovered her eyes. Squinting to see the room. To her left there were metal tables, sinks, metal trays and operating instruments. It looked like an operating room, or an autopsy room. She looked at her foot, and it's a tag on her toe. "Scully, Dana". Sitting straight up, she turned to her right, expecting to see the man who did this to her.

Immediately, her heart sank and her eyes filled up with tears. She was lying next to a lifeless Mulder, who is also naked beneath the sheet, with a tag on his foot, too. "Mulder, Fox". Scully began to cry, "Mulder?" she sobbed softly. Leaning over him, Scully hugged him, held on to him, crying on shoulder. "Why? What happened to you... Who did this?"

Mulder groans.

Shocked, Scully sat back, tears streaming from her eyes.

"Mulder??" She cried, as she grabbed his arm and shook it, "Mulder, are you ok? Can you hear me? Can you feel me?"

Mulder groaned again, and fidgeted. He moved his hand up to his head. "My head..." he mumbled.

Scully sighed, leaned over and kissed him on his forehead. Mulder barely opened his eyes. Scully, her face close to his. He sighed and with her tears streaming down his cheek, he smiled at her. Silently, they embraced each other. They both sighed.

Scully broke the embrace and looked into his eyes. Both were still groggy and with their heads spinning, they looked at each other and smiled. Both were glad to see each other. Scully leaned closer to Mulder, they're lips brushed. Scully pulled away slightly, and then Mulder leaned towards Scully. His arms wrapped tightly around her, he pulled her towards him. Silently, softly, cautiously his lips brushed hers. Closing their eyes, they kissed. Deeply and emotionally.

"Thank you." He said with a quiver in his voice.

Scully smiled at him, teary eyed. "I'm so happy, you're alive, you're here..."

They returned to the car, it was early morning, the air was fresh and crisp. Scully's phone rang, interrupting the silence.

"Scully". She stated.

"Sorry to do that to you, Dana. It was what I had to do. This is the last time you will hear from me. Take care of him."

Scully looked at Mulder; he was already in the car and was doing up his seat belt. She smiled and shook her head; she got into the car. Her phone rang again. Mulder looked at her, her smile had faded and she was staring at the phone. Mulder reached over and took the phone from her. Brushing his hand against hers, he answered the phone. Scully smiled.

"Scully? What the hell has been going on? I've been waiting for your phone call! Where are you? Have you seen Agent Mulder? Why haven't you called? Is everything ok?" Skinner yelled into the phone, with a concerned tone.

Scully started the car and began to drive.

"Everything is ok." Mulder replied.

"Mulder? Is that you? Thank God you're alive. What happened to you? I want to see you as soon as you get back here, in my office."

"I'll give it to you in my report." Mulder said with a laugh.

The End.
