Kaylee wept. Wash blinked, unbelieving. Jayne merely scowled. Mal knelt in the earth, saying nothing, simply lifting the dirt and inhaling the smell before letting it drift back down to the ground. But they all smelled it. It assaulted their nostrils, crawled into their brains and straight to their hearts.
Blood. The blood of innocents.
As Mal stood back up, Kaylee saw the fire behind his eyes, the hardening of his face, and the strength in his stance. She'd seen this before, and knew what it meant. "Gonna have to get Serenity ready," she thought. "Cap'n's on the warpath now."
