Immediately, Kaylee knew she'd gone too far. The looks of shock on her crewmates' faces hung like engine trails through the Black. Then, like an engine spitting back to life, they all started at once.

"Kaylee, honey," Mal started.

"It's alright, sweetie, just calm down," Inara cooed.

"Kaylee, are you..." Simon stuttered.

"That's the foulest thing I've ever heard from her," said Wash, both amused and impressed.

"What?" said River, slightly confused. "All she did was call Jayne a jerk."

"Yeah," Jayne whimpered. "But it ain't like I deserved it!"

"Jayne," Mal smirked over his shoulder, "you always deserve it."
