Leo lived life one addiction to the next. The booze and pills had been the most spectacular, but not the worst; the worst had been his work. Throwing himself into doing his job, shutting out everything else about life: that was the true addiction. He and his best friend, two against the world. Nothing would stop them, not life, not his marriage, not alcohol, not valium.

Then his "best friend" had taken that away from him. He was alone, without his favorite addiction. So he improvised.

The ice cube dropped from the perfect height into a good thick glass.

"Bastard."
