Anime Pie

by Mike Loader

Don McLean, eat your heart out...

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how
That anime used to make me smile.
And I knew that with a paragraph,
That I could make those people laugh,
And maybe they'd be happy for a while.

But the best friend started taking pills
And a starlight meeting only bodes ill
The end was near, and bitter
I couldn't recognize her

I don't recall if it was rape
Or suicide, both real and fake
But I knew there was no escape
The day the humor died

So bye, bye to the deadly cream pie
Went and walked down to the well but the well had run dry
And the good old boys were busy telling us lies
And saying This'll be how many'll die,
This'll be how many'll die.

Is your heart in the right place?
Cause the more things change the more they go apace.
No college student's day is ever finished all that quick.
Even a jelly donut and a cup of tea
Could cause confusion at the ministry
But the fourth wall started getting missing bricks.
Well no-one would stick to the script
Seasons changed and colors flipped
Life's dullest moments wear
It was more than I could bear
I acted in the mirror like a regular bloke
Now the mirror's cracked and filled with smoke
And that's what doomed my faintest hopes
The day the humor died

And it reflected,
Bye, bye to the deadly cream pie
Went and walked down to the well but the well had run dry
And the good old boys were busy telling us lies
And saying This'll be how many'll die,
This'll be how many'll die

Now it's ninety-seven years til 96
And the tomboy's still getting in her licks
But the hammer to fall is harder than it was
And the housewife saw the new guy in
And the samurai made the girl's head spin
It turned inward as love so often does
The grand old man he kept his seat
As the corpses rose around his feet
The new guy played his part
And the chef played a harp
Because a stepping stone leads to a race
That rock'll place you in one hard place
And the tomboy retired in disgrace
The day the humor died.

And she was shouting,
Bye, bye to the deadly cream pie
Went and walked down to the well but the well had run dry
And the good old boys were busy telling us lies
And saying This'll be how many'll die,
This'll be how many'll die

The sunrise rose and Circe sang
A contagious theme that would never wane
Although the high school girl ain't who she claimed to be
Pursue happiness if that's what you want
But a happy tale is seldom swapped
My old friend the king of pain told that to me
They say once a goddess owned the list
But the prince of cats made her desist
Now wolves run the list in samurai's clothing
Man, you're never too old for that kind of thing
And my autumn is someone else's spring
The day the humor died.

And I was singing,
Bye, bye to the deadly cream pie
Went and walked down to the well but the well had run dry
And the good old boys were busy telling us lies
And saying This'll be how many'll die,
This'll be how many'll die

The revolution turned my heart to ice
Hold on, takin' off clothes ain't nice
And the housewife's guest turned out to have a gun
The chef could cook, but poison's sweet
Under the stars we chanced to meet
And although the tune was sad we both had fun
But the crowd jumped in the eagle's roost
And the brothers would come forth as proof
That although I'd rant and rage
I just couldn't turn the page
And Mary Sue snuck in the back
To kiss and cuddle with some two-bit hack
Though DJ was better in the sack
The day the humor died

And he was singing,
Bye, bye to the deadly cream pie
Went and walked down to the well but the well had run dry
And the good old boys were busy telling us lies
And saying This'll be how many'll die,
This'll be how many'll die

Still waters run deep below Tai Park
But waters underground tend to be dark
And I guess some doors are better left shut tight
Myself, my door's been painted black
I'll be the last one standing and that's a fact
And relentless, I'll chase the wind that blows at night
Well they said the new guy had left town
But I think he's still somewhere around
The long road still winds along
And the tomboy's still hanging on
So I'll find bliss in a castle keep
The laughter's quiet, it's time to weep
They told me comedy ain't that deep
The day the humor died
