Day Two started off with me picking up Pebbs and Sparks and heading
back down to the con site. We got there at eleven, just as everyone had
agreed... and no one was at Denny's. Leaving Pebbs and Sparks to secure
a table, I jaywalked across the street to the Inn, where I found that everyone
had just woken up. It seems that Kerri had worked most of the night on a
story on her laptop, the others passing out anywhere between one and two.
Also, through an ironic twist of fate, Dandelion showed up at the restaurant
fifteen minutes after everyone left. They checked out, and by noon, we
were back at the restaurant, waiting for Kielle and Laersyn.
Finally, after some chit chat, Kielle showed up, dropped off by hubby Greg,
and informs us that Laersyn had some chores to take care of. Which meant that
with David gone, it was "Subrealicon: Ladies Day." Instantly, the gossip
flew faster, the talk a little raunchier. ToPics/Subrealicon that flit through my mind
are: de-haired Logans, Nightcrawlers and Beasts. What color is Beast's natural
skin? And on, and on, and on.......
Pebbs and Sparks kept popping in and out of the restaurant, giggling
and laughing, so I can only guess as to what they were up to. And we finally
decided on what we were going to do on Sunday: hit the comics shop, then
go to the Ripley's Believe it or Not! Museum in Buena Park. We gathered
up our stuff, and took off towards Kielle's apartment the surprise
was waiting.
Kielle's apartment is sorta how I imagine my own house will be when I
get married. Star Wars toys were lovingly covering the end table and the
coffee table, artwork covered the walls. After admonishing us to not touch the
toys, we went for them anyways, squealing over a box filled with lightsabres.
There were enough for everyone. We ogled Kielle's pets, and I even managed to
get a picture of Kielle's two fish. Wink is the white one, Nudge
is the brownish gold one. Yes, they were named after Abyss' slippers.
We lured Dande into the kitchen where we dished out the cake, and then
adjourned to the living room to chat and play some more with Greg's toys.
Best unintentional X2 joke of the con goes to Kerri:

Pebbs: <examining toy> Oh, what does this button do? It looks like
there's something white in there. <presses button, object
pops out>
Kerri: Oh! Something just discharged!
As we ate, we chatted and sang ("Righting wrongs and singing songs,
being mighty all day long/ It's Joxer! Joxer the Mighty!"), poured over
the artwork on the Newcomb walls and played some more with Greg's
immense Star Wars Episode One collection. By now, it was around two
or three, and we needed to get down to Ripley's before it closed. Greg
stopped by just as we were leaving, and we hurried out of there quickly,
as he does not like for his toys to be touched. I think he was
still screaming as we hightailed it across the parking lot.
Dande opened her gift outside, then we all caravanned down to the Rite Aid
where David had dropped off his three rolls of film the day before.
Somewhere along the way, we lost Rogue and Kerri, most likely because
they didn't know we were going to stop and get the pictures. More
hilarity ensued as we wandered the store looking for Pebbs and Sparks,
finally finding them at the book section. Of course we made fun of
those bodice ripper stories, and OF COURSE, I had to show how silly they
were by reading it out loud in a dramatic voice. I'll bet the authors
have no idea how silly it sounds to say that "Gunther ripped off
her clothing, leaving her breathless and as naked as the day
she was born" (Side Note: Maybe we can put in excerpts like that in the
how NOT to write erotica styleguide).
We were all pretty thirsty and giddy, and it was a howling mad group
that checked out, while listening to JB explain a new "Boob Woman" story
concept, starring Panty Liner, his French sidekick Tamponne (complete with red beret
with white string) and "evil" Panty Liner (you know he's evil because he
has a goatee). We laughed all the way down to the comics shop, occasionally
head-banging to a particulary good song.
I dropped off Pebbs and Mice and took Sparks back to her house so
she could score some more cash. By the time we got back, almost every
Subrealicon girl had picked up some real nice stuff. I got the newest
Strangers in Paradise TPB, the second volume of the manga version of
Return of the Jedi and ToyFare. Along the way, I found out that
Kielle also collects female figures (just like me) and that Electronic
Lightup Nightcrawler is very well-endowed. Kerri made a new online
friend in one of the store clerks; they share a mutual friend.
Much sweetness goes out to manager Daniel Martinez at
Mile High Comics <smoocheroo!>
who was kind enough to take a group picture of us and give us a standing 15% discount off of
our purchases that day and any future purchases. There's something to be
said about being a cute girl in a comic book store....
As they had about four hours of driving ahead of them, Dande and Kerri
made their farewells, causing us to give them hugs group hugs. Kielle switched
from Dande's car to JB's and we tooled down to the Ripley's Museum. We got there
around 5:45pm... and the place closed at 6:00. As Rogue was starting to
feel the effects of two days of non-stop fun, the remainig six of us
hurriedly asked the nice lady behind the counter if we could still get in, and she agreed. We doled out
our $7.15 each (hooray for the AAA discount) and trooped through the museum.
It was here that Kielle offered us the Subrealicon Fanfic Challenge:.
This made our exploration of the museum all the more urgent.
The extent of the museum is fantastic. It covers a lot of primitive
(by Western standards) cultures and shows their unusual customs and currency.
I think one exhibit that tickled my fancy was that showing these elaborate
belts that were used as currency in one tribe. The placard next to it
said that you could buy a wife with an especially brilliantly made one. It wasn't
until we got to the "optical illusions" rooms that we started to goof off.
There was this one installation that demonstrated how the human body
can conduct electricity. Basically, one person grabs a hold of one metal
post, another person grabs a different post, and they link hands. If all
works well (and if you're not standing in a puddle of water), a local
radio station starts playing. We tried it with all six of us, and got a
Cher dance tune. We clutched hands the whole way through
the song, teaching Kielle the lyrics, so by the end of the song, we were
singing over and over again:
Do you believe in life after love?
I can feel something inside me saying, I really don't think it's strong enough...
Then, Madonna started to vogue, and while one person manned the
"DJ booth" the rest of us started getting down! I'll tell ya, if we ever
get together again, we have to go clubbing. There were several more fun
moments, including going through an earthquake simulator and matching up
actors' stage names with their real names. It was also here that we composed a
little love letter to Dex.
Unfortunately, as do all good things, the day came to an end. I bade
farewell to JB and Rogue who were going south in the San Diego direction and
Mice, Pebbs, Sparks and Kielle piled into my car. Since we were already
in Buena Park, we dropped Pebbs off first, then Sparks. I asked Kielle if
I could drop her off last (because my mom insisted that I not drive
back from Pasadena alone) and after gassing up (not me, my car) we took the
long route to Mice's house, winding down the evening. Traffic wasn't that
bad, and we were able to take advantage of the nice night evening.
By this time, the sun had already set, and it was slightly after
sundown when we reached Mice's house. We said goodnight, then I turned
my car back around to go to Kielle's. Thus far, we had not encountered
any major traffic snarls. This was to change when we hit the I-210/57 interchange.
So, while we were stuck in traffic, Kielle grilled me about how
I got into fanfic. We gossiped about other things (no, I'm not telling you
that stuff!) and made plans to get together sometime, a double date between
her and Greg and me and my fiance, at a Japanese restaurant we both
know of. We said goodbye, and I went home, knowing full well that I would
definitely see these people again. I smiled all the way home.
