And in the guest suite of Juri of Avalon, sometime after the dinner hour, there comes a knocking on her chamber door. Juri of Avalon says, "Come in." Corrine slips in. "Hey, Juri." She smiles slightly, still upright but looking like she's had a long day. Which is pretty damn accurate, all told. "Mind if I plop down and sprawl for a little while?" Juri of Avalon smiles back and points to a chair near the table she's seated at, going over diagrams. "Go ahead. Want something to drink?" Corrine says, "Oh yes, -please-. After the day I've had, I need something strong. But not too much, since I'm going to try and see Anthy before I crash for the night, if I can." She sighs, looking slightly sad, a little melencholy, but also wry as she plops down in the offered chair. Juri of Avalon gets up, goes to the room's little wet bar, and pours Corrine a tumbler of brandy. She brings it over, deposits it on the table before her, then settles back into her own chair. "How is Queen Anthy doing? All those secrets coming out at once to everyone... must have been very trying for her." She shakes her head ruefully. "I feel rather bad for what I said to her, truthfully." Corrine accepts the brandy with her thanks, and hehs a little bit. "Quite frankly... I've been suspecting for a while as to whom her real parents were. Both from stuff we learned in our travels, and from before, when Utena told us the story of how she met John Shaft." She shrugs, and sips her brandy. "Was going to get around to asking her privately at some point, but, well... the moment was there. We took it, and it helped provide clues, and perhaps some healing as well." Corrine says, "As for how she's doing... well, last I saw she and Mikage were in the garden, but I haven't seen them since. I'll check back down there tonight, since she hangs out there a lot. I -guess- she's doing okay?" She shrugs again. Juri of Avalon nods. "Carrying around those kinds of secrets tears you up inside," she murmurs. "You want to get them out into the open, but you're terrified of what others will think of you. I understand how she feels." She chuckles dryly. "There was a lot of catharsis today, I think." Corrine hehs a bit, and nods. "Yeah... I suspect Kozue and Madoka won't look at each other the same way again, I imagine. And that's for the better, thank the Unicorn." Corrine drinks more of her brandy, thoughtful. Juri of Avalon nods. "Kozue... Kozuen. The one I knew. She always seemed troubled at Ohtori, and made her brother's life very difficult. Later on, when we met again, I treated her very badly because of that; I couldn't let go of the past and see that she was a very different person. I really regret that." Corrine mmms, and nods. "Past events make it hard for present-day acceptance, even if you try to." Her lips quirk upwards a bit. "I know that very well, and see it all too often in my family... Kozue... Nanami... Derith... parts of their lives I'll never know; if I did perhaps things would have been different than they are now..." she shrugs, and sighs. "...but you can't go back. But you -can- learn to let go and learn new... hell, at the moment I'm torn between chewing Derith out and feeling sorry for him. Wheeeee." She rolls her eyes, and looks wry. "but yeah, the foundation is the past events and experiences, and it's hard to get past that. for anybody." Corrine says, "But hey, you helped here, with Kozue and Miki and Madoka. You -made a difference-. That's gotta count for something, I'd think." Juri of Avalon nods. "I was glad to be able to do the kinds of things for them that I couldn't do in my own universe. Mikel... we were on different sides. We saw each other twice during the crisis. What was I supposed to say to him, or him to me? If we'd had to, we would have fought to the death." Corrine mrms, and nods. "Hard choices, especially for something that charged between Avalon or Amber and Chaos, if the parallels fully carry over." She sighs, and leans back in her chair. "Good -pyricorn-, do I hate politics. Hate 'm hate 'm hate 'm." Juri of Avalon sighs. "You and me both." Juri of Avalon laughs suddenly. "Did I ever tell you how close I came to becoming Queen of my realm?" Corrine raises her eyebrows. "Nooooo, I can't say that you have." Juri of Avalon chuckles. "My brother Meredith, right before all hell broke loose, asked me to support him for the throne. I was hesitant, because while I liked him, I didn't trust hm with the power. But, finally, I gave in, because I felt the realm needed to be united under a single leader who was present." Juri of Avalon says, "Then, once he found out that I would have supported him, said that he wanted me to take the throne, because the rest of the family trusted me more." Juri of Avalon says, "I suspect that he was partly thinking that he could be the power behind the throne, because while Meredith is a good man, he is the model, I think, upon which all politicians--the good ones--are based." Juri of Avalon says, "I agreed. And then all hell broke loose, and we never got around to doing anything about it." Juri of Avalon laughs again. "The closest I've really come to political power." Corrine blinks, and laughs. "Lucky you. Well, it looks like the right man for the job got it, anyway. And you managed to dodge the big chair." She looks wry, glancing down at her bourbon and knocking it back. "As for me, hell, I've pretyt much done everythign I could to -avoid- that rigamarole. What with dad's politicking left and right, serving as support for sis during her short regency for one of dad's jaunts out into Shadow, and the wars, and the damn Succession Crisis... leave me in Arden, I'm quite happy there, -thank you-." Juri of Avalon smiles faintly. "And yet you are Queen in Ember, and a good one." Corrine coughs, and blushes, her sarcastic tone blunted. "So, of course, I'm now Queen of a Kingdom easily on par with Amber, if not moreso. I swear, though, the DemiJewel and the Fire Pattern should have come with a warning label." Corrine says, "'Warning -- Repairing this Pattern will cause reality to be rewritten to your subconcious desires and give you a headache even an Excederin the size of the Chrystler Building will not cure. Are you -really- sure you want to do this?'" Corrine says, "If it wasn't for Catherine, Lonz, and Funaho, I prolly woulda tanked out my first year..." Corrine says, "...but yeah... I suppose I'm doing good by it." She blushes faintly, again. "...'cause, well... they're my people, y'know?" Juri of Avalon smiles and nods. "Your father, Gendo... what sort of man was he?" Corrine hehs a bit. "Father? At times caring, at times callous... willing to play us against each other to get what he wanted, or to manipulate other kingdoms into fighting each other to keep the heat off Amber... but at the same time, the sort of man who helped his daughter learn how to care for a dragon, to raise children... someone whom I'm learning prolly cared more about us and the kingdom than he ever let on." Corrine says, "He was ruthless, a right bastard, sometimes jugemental, and very much human... but he was dad." She shrugs, and refills her tumbler. Juri of Avalon laughs. "Then it is unsurprising that the family and the kingdom he would create would be as it is, no? We make our dreams in our own image. Your siblings--Nanami, Touga, Kozue--many of them sound a lot like him. Others, like you, seem to have gotten certain sides of him. And thus, your own universe would be made in your image, different, and everyone inhabiting it would be a reflection or a fragment of you." Corrine considers that, and chuckles. "Yeah. Yeah, I can see that. I'm a realist -- after all the wars I've lived through, I know conflict isn't going to go away with the wave of a magic wand... but at the same time, I try to hold onto hope that there -will- be better tomorrows, and work accordingly towards that... and perhaps Ember's reflecting that. I never really -did- the 'seek the ideal perfect kingdom out in Shadow' thing, like others have, like Drake with his Marketplace, or sis with her Avalon... but I kinda got it anyway, with Ember." She blushes again, and her voice quiets somewhat. "Weird world, y'know? At times it can be trying to be Queen... but I don't think I'd give it up now. All the centuries I denied ever having a desire to be one, and it was -very- much a true desire not to, to avoid the pains that stemmed from it... and it happened anyway." She quirks a smile, sipping her brandy. Juri of Avalon says, "It's easy to say you don't want the responsibility of power when it's within your grasp. But when it's held out to you as though on a silver platter, you begin to think... 'Imagine what I could do with this.' That's what I did with the spikard aboard Fido; I knew that we couldn't possibly hand it over to the Nameless Finndo, and... I thought if I could wield its power, that would help us stop him. Instead, I nearly..." Corrine reaches a hand over, and squeezes Juri's hand. "You nearly. But didn't. Better than I did." She smiles faintly. "If that thing with Hummingbird had happened other than your universe..." she shudders a bit. Corrine whispers, "I don't want to lose another sister. Not again." Juri of Avalon nods and makes a face. "I've had quite enough wounds that won't stop bleeding, yes--what?" Juri of Avalon looks rather shocked. Corrine blinks at what she said, and blushes, but nods. She quirks a cockeyed smile. "Yes. I said what I said, and I mean what I said. 'cause I've been feeling it for a while now, and only now I felt that I could voice it, Juri." Corrine says, "Prolly brought on 'cause if we don't stop annadil in under a week, it ain't gonna make a hell of a lot of difference... but I beleive, now that Vialle was right." Juri of Avalon laughs softly. "Well... it's unexpected, but not at all unwelcome. I suppose I've really felt the same way for a long time now." She squeezes Corrine's hand back. "I mean, really, what makes a family, when you get down to it? Is it merely blood? I don't think it is... sister." Corrine says, "Sisters in spirit, if not in blood." She quirks a smile, and smiles more fully, as Juri says the same thing. "As I said to shizumaru a -hell- of a long time ago, -you- and only you have the right to define what a relationship is, and how it should be reacted to. Parentage has nothing to do with it, even though others might say otherwise." Juri of Avalon looks away. "Parentage creates certain bonds," she says softly. "Sometimes they link you together, and sometimes they chafe. For Darako and I, it was always chafing." Corrine mmms, and nods slightly. "So I gathered," she comments quietly, "from what I've heard from you, and what I heard from her during our breif meeting in the Cave of Worlds. So I can't be the one to judge, since I know my own family has had its share of being rubbed the wrong way due to father's multiple marraiges." Juri of Avalon looks away from Corrine, though she keeps holding her hand. "Your sister... the other Juri. How does rescuing her go?" Corrine sighs, looking downcast, but doesn't let go. "I don't know. Shaft came back from trying to recover her, but it didn't go well. The mage I sent to assist him... didn't make it." She closes her eyes for a few moments. "I've heard murmurs that her rescue is being deferred until Justice and the Seed of Hope can be recovered, which I regretfully have to agree with. Without the icons, we cannot as easily defeat the Outsiders." Corrine says, "Supposedly, Leviathan and the Outsiders now hold Rebma, if Miki and Mikage are to be beleived... presumably, she would be down there. But I don't know." Juri of Avalon sighs. "I'm sure you'll get her back." Corrine quirks a slight smile. "One way or another... I'd better." She looks rueful. "I or somebody else may need to knock some sense into her on our reunion, though; I'll eat my sleeves if somebody -hasn't- tried tampering with her to turn her against us." She frowns a bit, and then sighs again. "Damn me for having to think this way... but given what's happened to the rest of my family, I can't but help think that Annadil would -love- doing that, and I can't discount it." Juri of Avalon nods, but stays quiet. Corrine squeezes Juri's hand again, and sips her brandy with her free hand. She then speaks again, quietly. "You are not a replacement of my blood-sister, Juri of Avalon... but you are sister and kin to me, equally valued, and I treasure our relationship for what little time we've spent together, and I hope that, together, we can bring Juri back." "As do I," Juri says softly. "You're very important to me, Corrine, in the way that few people ever have been. I would die for you, and I do not say that at all lightly." Corrine blushes at that, but nods. "And I for you. Though I hope we don't do the 'tragic heroine death thing'... to put it bluntly, it'd suck." She quirks a slight smile. "So don't go and die on me, and I won't go and die on you, 'kay?" Mike pages, "Oi, what's new? :)" to you. You page, "Nice conversational scene with Corrine aand JuriAv! And finished the Miki trump. So, this evening, I shall pack for Katsu, and hopefully do FoF Artwork there." to Mike. Mike pages, "Hmmm. Well, we'll see. :)" to you. You page, "Well, it's more likely now, unless inspiraiton suddenly shangheis me. Having my friends around at the 'con could do that. But I'm planning to maek a lot of TAMD-related commisions at the 'con, so that might help flip in the other balance." to Mike. "Deal. No dying. I can handle that." Juri laughs. "Besides, if I tried to die for you, Roderick would probably try to die for me, and then it would get all tangled." Corrine snrks. "And trying to explain it to everybody... just way, -way- too much of a mess." She chuckles, squeezes Juri's hand again, and lets go. "No domino effects, please." Juri of Avalon nods. Then she fidgets a bit. "I still need to talk to him about the whole... you know. Love thing." Corrine chuckles a bit, and looks wry. "Well, that's one key difference between you and sis that I've noticed, Juri... you're a lot more, well... open about such things, in some ways, than she's been." She then quirks a wry grin. "It's been refreshing, in its way. Watching other people's reactions has been... amusing." She blushes, and winks. Juri of Avalon laughs. "I used to be like your sister, probably. I hid that side of myself away. Then I realized--not too long ago, during the crisis my family faced--that it just wasn't worth it any longer." Juri of Avalon says, "So I decided that I'm not going to hide who I am, and if anyone takes issue with that... well, let them." Corrine smiles. "Yeah... Juri can be very, well... reserved. Then again, given her life, it's not surprising that she ended up such -- sometimes it feels like I dodged the bullet when she got it full-on. But it does make it difficult at times to figure -what- she's feeling, and if -I- can't figure what she's feeling, nobody else has even close to a hope." Her smile softens. "But with Hiko around, I think she's started to open up again... so hey. Miracles -do- happen." She winks once more, and then laughs. "Good policy. Works well. I like it." Juri of Avalon smiles. "Hiko's a nice young woman. I expect she's been good for your sister." Corrine nods. "In the few times we've seen each other since this entire damnable business started... yes, she has. -Very- much. The smile's reaching her eyes again... I was starting to despair of ever seeing that." Juri of Avalon looks up. "I sometimes wonder if I'll ever have a child of my own." Corrine mmmms, and considers. "I can't predict the future... no-one can... but if you do, I think you'll be a good mother to him or her. I just can't see it otherwise." Corrine says, "Hell, -I- wondered the same, and look where I ended up." She blushes, and chuckles. "Okay, a slightly different route than the normal, but -one day-..." Juri of Avalon nods. "I'd hope so. I always had lots of 'children', when I was running the school. Some I was very close to." Corrine nods. "Yeah... same here, back at the Art Conservatory I had in Shadow. And pretty much all of them went on to good artistic lives. It was a good life." She quirks a reminiscent smile. Juri of Avalon says, "Time comes to move on, though. I wasn't really necessary to the school. I just put my name on it." Corrine mmms. "Yeah. Me, I handed it off to Catherine... Catherine Pariseau, not my regent... and returned home, my exile completed." Corrine then chuckles. "Sis and I went back to visit, since I wanted to show her what it had looked like, and it'd turned into one of the top art academies in that world." Corrine says, "Which, well, made it a bitch reclaiming the paintings I wanted to get back, since they were now historical national treasures." She eyerolls, good-naturedly. Juri of Avalon chuckles. "My school is in a Shadow attached very closely to Avalon, so I shouldn't have that sort of trouble when I go back. Although my reputation has... suffered." Corrine mmms, and nods. "So I surmised. Well, when you get back, you can set things right. Now that it seems that we've got more than one way -to- get you back safely, it shouldn't be -that- difficult to keep in touch." She smiles slightly. "And I do want to do that." Juri of Avalon says, "Well, we have to stop all of creation from being destroyed first, but I don't want to lose touch either." Corrine says, "Well, yes, there is that," she comments, dryly. She then hrms. "'... build a bond between three emperiled universes.'... hrm. You wouldn't happen to have any songs you'd strongly associate with Merideth or Angus, would you? 'cause with everything that's happened today, it's just sunk in that if somebody tries redrawing the Logrus, -everybody- gets screwed over, even if they don't know. Prolly should ask Roderick the next time I see him what songs he knows have strong connotations to his King Random..." Corrine says, "I'd have Gaby investgate this musical trump business futher, and she'd be -willingly- doing so, but with the cooldown needs of Arden, the troop movements to Amber and the Keep, and the possible need to cool down Frostspire, she's getting overloaded." Juri of Avalon pauses. "Angus used to sing a song sometimes to me when I was a child. He took me sailing once, out on his lake, and I remember him singing it while the spray hit my face." Corrine giggles a bit, and smiles. "Ooops. Sounds like Tylor." "Angus was never really a sailor, but he was very kind to me when I was a child," Juri says wistfully. Corrine smiles slightly. "A good man to know." She hehs a bit. "Well, when we get back from the Keep, we should still have a decent window to try and get word out. So we should try it, if nothing else." Juri of Avalon nods. Corrine drains her second brandy, and checks to see if Juri needs a refill. "so many things, so little time... sheesh. But yet, we soldier on, as if the 'Ends of the Worlds' wasn't coming on..." Juri of Avalon shrugs. "What else is there to do?" Corrine nods. "True enough. Can't stop fighting, so best we do our best for a better tomorrow. At least Ember's got enough troops to handle its internal and Lava Circle stuff while also helping out down here in Amber and with the keep, for which I'm grateful. Makes me sleep a little better at night knowing I'm not throwing -everything- into one basket." Juri of Avalon nods. "Feel better now about things?" Corrine says, "More optimistic, yes. Even with all the curve balls things are throwing us. Even if we can't sail out of the harbor, Amber will at least -have- a navy again for the time being, and I think I'm going to have one of my spacegoing vessels while we're gone ascend past the cloud layer and perhaps go suborbital to try and gauge the size of the Shadow Storm over Rebma, and report back to Yuriko. Get a good sat-eye view of ths situation. And as for the miltary situations north and south of here..." She shrugs. "It's getting weird, but I've sent support to Touga and Saionji, since there's some rather... -odd- reports they've been getting in the campaign's they're in. Talma's getting invaded by a wave of nomads out of shadow fleeing some sort of 'Red Menace', and Saionji asked me to put pressure on Kashfa to draw the heat off Begma so that he can deal with a group of rebels in Western Harad..." Corrine then rolls her eyes. "... what's weird about -that- situation is that their leader is claming to be Eowyn, my eldest sister. Which is pretty damn strange, since she -died- under the ice of Lake Harad over six centuries ago. We recovered the body, even." Corrine says, "Admittedly, I was only 'bout eight at the time, but..." She shrugs, and sighs a bit. Juri of Avalon frowns. "That is odd. Is someone looking into it?" Corrine says, "Oh, -I- would, definitely... save that we're heading for the Keep tomorrow. I -did- ask Saionji to try and capture her, hopefully... when we get back, I'll have to see how things went. I rather doubt Eowyn would have laid low for THAT long if it -was- her, given there would have been ample opportunity in the past to try and raise arms in Harad, so I'm inclined to think whoever it is -isn't- her. Who it -could- be, I don't know, but while I was gone building Ember and then travelling with you, Annadil had his agents incite the Golden Circle to war against themselves and Amber... or at least key parts, so that it'd get deadlocked and unable to assist." Corrine drinks more of her brandy. Juri of Avalon asks, "Could it be the Eowyn of Embra?" Corrine mmmms. "I... don't know. We'd need someone with Pattern Sight to look. To the best of my knowledge, the number of surviving royal family members in Embra is the same as ours, just twisted in personality. So if their histories even -close- to mirrored our own, Eowyn, Catherine, and Haruka Minor would all be long dead. Now, this doesn't discount more common Shadows of them appearing, or perhaps a shapeshifter claiming to be her..." she shrugs. "Again, I'd like to investgate, but I can't, so I'll leave it alone in the back of my mind until I can really -deal- with it." Juri of Avalon says, "That's the best way. You can't spread yourself too thin." Corrine chuckles, and nods. "This is -why- I have staff officers." She grins. "Good unicorn, I'm glad we took the time to bring Funaho and Lonz down here.. they'll keep watch on things while we're gone." She sighs. "Misaki's likely to still be bed-ridden though she's recovering, but I'm having Azaka and Kamidake trumped down tonight before I head to bed, and they'll be accompanying us." Juri of Avalon nods. "I have plenty of preliminary plans, but I'll need to know everything--everything--there is to know about the Keep to make a final one." Corrine nods. "Of course. We'll need to trawl Mikage for all the information he got out of Tsuwabuki's head... we've got the information from our own visit, and Shizumaru and Hiko's, but that's only partial." Juri of Avalon frowns at the mention of Mikage. "How much do you all know about him?" Corrine says, "Mikage?" She sighs. "Myself, not very much, unfortuantely. Admittedly, I've hardly -spoken- with him since he came to Amber, what with everything. He was there when there was the Rose Duel between grandfather and Annadil. I gave him one of my spare trump decks afterwards, and he was decent and polite. He apparently came to our shores after he got assaulted by my Embran Shadow. He's walked the Air and Water Patterns, has Chaos Blood -- those I determined with Pattern Sight. he's one of the Five Children of the Elements, and now has the Bag of Winds. And I think it was pretty obvious that he's got some affection for Anthy." She shrugs. "If you want more information, you'll have to ask the other four Children... they've interacted more with him, given circumstances." Corrine says, "Oh, and right." Corrine says, "Wasyuu belives that he's the son of Gil-Galad and Utena, though -damned- if I know how -that- happened, given that I think Annadil was also likely involved in his conception." Juri of Avalon frowns. "I don't like him very much, but I'm not sure how much of that is because of him, and how much is because the Mikage that I knew was an Abyss-based computer that helped Brand manipulate my mind." Corrine nods. "Ahhhhhhh. Well, while there -might- be parallels, there's also divergencies. And he's very much flesh-and-blood. I'm not going to ask you to -like- him, but since he's very likely going to be coming along with us to the Keep, try to refrain from tearing his head off?" She quirks a slight, wry smile. "Children of the Elements are hard to replace." Corrine has the look on her face of one who can see the pieces fitting about things only barely told earlier. Corrine . o O (Yes, after getting mindscrewed by Evil Black Tar, I can see how it'd be hard to trust any Mikage's.) Juri of Avalon says, "And I don't like that ring he wears." Corrine mmmmms. "Bad memories, or something more? Or some link to something else?" Juri of Avalon says, "The Black Rose signets were used to control the minds of people and make them duel." Corrine purses her lips. "Compulsions. Yay. And if he kept wearing it during a pattern walk, it'd lock back on even if his brain was recently cleaned." She sighs. "But unfortunately, my skills aren't geared towards decently analyzing artifacts at a casual glance, so I can't evaluate it surreptitiously." Juri of Avalon says, "I just think he could be dangerous. Plus... well, I don't like his attitude. He needs to learn some manners." Corrine looks ruefully down at her Ruby Pyricorn Signet Ring. "I know a decent amount about the Trumps. I've developed the ability to see through the Pattern. And I've got some idea on the nature of constructs like my daughter... but artifacts, those I tend to use, not build." She quirks a smile. "Or at least timing. Again, like I said, he was polite at the times I first met him." She then grins. "Perhaps he and Shaft should go into the same boat for finishing school...." Corrine says, "though, they'd probably throttle each other before they got out of the harbor." Juri of Avalon shrugs. "I won't even get into the amount of things _that_ one needs to learn." Corrine chuckles, and nods. "This is true. I -thought- he had something of a clue, but -recently-..." She eyerolls, and then yawns. She blushes, embarrased. "Hrm.... I'd best be heading out and trying to find Anthy before I get turned into a rutabega." Juri of Avalon shrugs. "We might have lost Kozue if he'd been the only one trying to get her." Juri of Avalon nods. "Well... good luck, Corrine." Corrine says, "Tell you what, I'll try to find Shizumaru, and ask him to come early to the meeting tomorrow morning, 'round breakfast, so we can pick his brain on how he feels about Mikage..." She then mmms, and nods. "And yeah. And you too, Juri." Juri of Avalon stands up and offers her hand to Corrine. "Sister." Corrine gets up from her seat, moves over, takes Juri's hand, and gives Juri a quick hug. "Love you, Sister. And good luck with Roderick." She winks. Juri of Avalon laughs nervously. "I'll need it." Corrine chuckles, and squeezes the hug a bit before letting go. "And you've got it. See you tomorrow." And so we fade on this scene... to segue into another one which was played at another time. =============================== =============================== Juri of Avalon says, "OOC: Five minute warning, Phil--I need to go to my dentist soon." Corrine OOCly says, "And I need to bail soon as well, so I think we can wrap this up. :)" Juri of Avalon says, "Oh, yeah, Phil, I have a trump of Juri and Rod's kid, just a minute. :)" Corrine OOCly says, "Oooo, yay!" Corrine OOCly says, "I've heard of all the theory that she's going to, but not seen the actual. Guess we've got a real Ember Royal Extended Family developing already. :)" Juri of Avalon says, "OOC: Yup." Rabies has left. Corrine exclaims, "And now, later for me. Back tonight!" Shizumaru waves.
