From tbutler@birch.net Mon Jul 30 10:59:54 2001 Date: Mon, 30 Jul 2001 09:40:03 -0500 From: Travis Butler To: Philip J. Moyer , Chris Bremner Subject: [Amber/UnS] 7/29 Investigating isn't always easy... Windir> Wakaba asks, "OOC Okay, whatcha gonna do next?" Windir> Wakaba asks, "OOC Get Naru and head to Panopticon?" Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC And as soon as Bey hears about *this* fracas, he's definitely giving Keitaro an apology. He feels responsible both for dragging Kei into more danger than he'd expected, and for bringing him into Kuonji's grudge against Bey. o.o" Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Ayup. :)" Windir> Beowulf trumps Naru. Windir> You trump Naru to yourself, no problem. Windir> Beowulf explains that he's going to Panopticon to find out what happened with the attack on Jacqui's party (including Keitaro), and wanted her to come along because he thought it would make some cover to show her around as a prospective student, and because he thought she'd enjoy the trip. Windir> Naru tells you she'd love to come, as she'd like to see it and she could use some distraction. Windir> Beowulf thanks her, and gets ready to trump to Panopticon. Just to be on the safe side, he asks Aeris if she can keep an eye out for similar nanomachine infestations, before they leave. Windir> Aeris says, "I'll do my best." Windir> Beowulf trumps to Panopticon. He stops by a few of the professors he's known and shows Naru around, on the way to the Castellan's office. Windir> She greatly enjoys the tour. You reach the Castellan's office, where his secretary, Mr. Quarashi is. "Good day," he says. "How can I help you?" Windir> Beowulf bows politely to the secretary. "I was wondering if the Castellan might have a few moments to see me?" Windir> Beowulf is using his 'Navigating Academia' notable skill here. ^_^ Windir> Mr. Quarashi checks out the Castellan's social calendar. "Do you have an appointment?" Windir> Beowulf asks, "No, I'm afraid I don't. I'm trying to investigate sabotage that happened to my niece's ship, and that may have happened here -- OOC When did it happen game time?" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Early yesterday." Windir> Beowulf says, "--happened here early yesterday." Windir> The man says, "Have you talked to the Port Authority? They deal with ship sabotage." Windir> Beowulf nods. "Of course. More than anything else, I wanted to check with him to make sure I wasn't stepping on his toes by investigating." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Just to see if we can avoid the 'Kanna at CAFAM' problem. ^_^" Windir> He says, "I suggest you talk to the head of the Port Authority." Windir> Beowulf nods. "Indeed. Thank you very much for your time." Windir> He continues, "As while the Castellan has ultimate authority over that, we rarely deal with anything of their business here but funding and personel matters." Windir> Beowulf says, "Of course. If things get to the level where that becomes important, I'll be sure to let him know." Windir> Beowulf bids the secretary a respectful farewell and goes to the Port Authority's offices. Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC So much for my attempt to go straight to the top. ^_-;;" Windir> You reach the Port Authority. Desk clerk Tyal, a bored middle aged man, greets you after you stand in line a while. "Hello, how can I help you?" he asks. Windir> Beowulf asks, "OOC Using Navagiting Academia, what do I think would be teh best way to get in to see the head of the Port Authority without alerting our target?" Windir> The best way is to go through channels, as you won't attract much attention that way, while trying to cut corners is more likely to alert anyone to your presence. Windir> Beowulf asks, "OOC As in asking the clerk for an appointment with the head, or asking the clerk about investigating a problem that happened to my niece's ship?" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Asking the clerk about the procedures for investigating. Getting an appointment with the head of the Port Authority, if they're being monistored by the guilty party, would likely send up a big ass flag." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Ahhh. :)" Windir> Beowulf says, "My niece had a problem with her ship yesterday, that may have originated here; I was wondering how I could go about investigating that." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC I had been thinking 'go to the top to avoid potentially being stuck talking with the guilty party,', but seems like this may not be the best tack. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Well, the problem is that the heads of large organizations don't WANT to talk to everyone with an interest in their org's business or else they wouldn't bother having an organization. So you might get stuck waiting days for an appointment." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Ah, I see. No problem. :)" Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC About when would you like to call it a night? I'll probably be wanting to crash in a half-hour or so." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Half hour more is good for me." Windir> Beowulf says, "It may have been a case of sabotage; I'm not sure yet." Windir> He says, "What's the ship?" Windir> Beowulf gives the name of their ship. "The captain would be Jacqueline Tenjou." Windir> He checks their files. "We have no record of any report of sabotage." Windir> Beowulf says, "The sabotage involved infecting her ship with nanobots. I learned of the problem when she alerted me via a trump call; I don't believe they've arrived at their destination yet, and have not had the chance to report the issue through normal channels." Windir> He says, "Ahh, right. Well, until we get a formal report, we can't actually open an investigation." Windir> Beowulf nods. "Would they need to be the ones to submit the report, or can I do that?" Windir> "Are you a practicing lawyer with power of attorney for your relative?" Windir> Beowulf shakes his head. "No. Would I need to hire one locally, or could I bring in one who works for the family?" Windir> He says, "You need someone who is registered on the Panopticon bar here." Windir> Beowulf nods. OOC Can I think of anyone who works for Amber who is? And if I can't think of anyone, who would be the best person back home to check with? Aunt Nanami, or Miki? Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC None of the family has a license to practice law at Panopticon." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC In other words, I'll need to hire one here. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC You could probably get one of your old professors to recommend you a good lawyer here." Windir> Beowulf OOCly nods. Windir> Beowulf asks, "Thank you. Once I have a lawyer and have filed the report, what will the proper procedure be?" Windir> He asks, "Do you have a Private Investigator's license?" Windir> Beowulf shakes his head. "I presume I'll need to have a licensed investigator to help as well?" Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC So much for my 'familiarity' with Panopticon. o.o" Windir> The man says, "If you want to investigate in addition to our investigation, yes. Although if your relatives you say got sabotaged ever file a report on the sabotage themselves, you won't need the lawyer for the investigation, just to file a sabotage claim without being a witness or passenger on the sabotaged ship or its owner. Once we get a formal report either from them or a lawyer with power of attorney..." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Dude, you went to college here, you didn't investigate crimes here." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC I see. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC I mean, I've been at KU longer than Beowulf was at Panopticon, but I don't even know where the Police Station is :)" Windir> Beowulf OOCly true. :) Windir> Beowulf OOCly tries to disentangle the clerk's statement. IOW, I need the lawyer to file the claim, but if I can get someone from the ship to file the claim the lawyer won't be needed? Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC IF you were trying to fidn a professor, or get access to research facilities, or know students, or other things that don't fall under 'criminal law'" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Exactly. It takes a witness or the ship's owner or a passenger to file a report, or a lawyer authorized to act for them." Windir> Beowulf bows. "Thank you. Is there anything else that will be needed?" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Otherwise, with no ship and no evidence at hand, they can't tell you're not a loon off the street :)" Windir> Beowulf says, "I'll try to contact them at the ship and see if we can get someone here to file the report." Windir> He nods. "Good, good. How can we contact you to let you know we've recieved the report and begun an investigation?" Windir> Beowulf asks, "I should be coming in with the person from the ship; will they need to file the report here?" Windir> He says, "Or they can send it over the CommNet, of course. Although coming in personally does help make sure we get all relevant information." Windir> Beowulf says, "Of course. I always prefer to take care of things in person, if possible." Windir> He says, "Well, we're open 24 hours since the port is, so someone will be here whenever you're ready." Windir> Beowulf nods. "Many thanks. Let me call someone up, and we should be back." Windir> Beowulf finds a quiet out-of-the way place where he can call privately, and tries trumping Jacqui. Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Unfortunately, Rod's driving home from work right now. ^^;;;" Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Ack. :p Well, who can I reasonably talk to without stepping on any toes? x.x" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Ahh, I know, Morgenstern owns the ship anyway. He can intercept the call and talk to you :)" Windir> Beowulf OOCly grins. That works. Windir> Oddly, you get Morgy instead of Jacqui. He says, "Jacqui's in no condition to talk to anyone right now. What's up, Beowulf?" Windir> Beowulf blinks. "Oh, dear... I hope she'll be all right." He sighs for a moment. "I'm here at Panopticon; the Port Authority needs either someone actually on the ship, or a report from a lawyer with power of attorney, before they'll let me start investigating the sabotage." Windir> Beowulf asks, "Would anyone there be available to pop over to me and file the report, before going back to join you?" Windir> Morgenstern frowns. "Everyone's sort of in a pissy mood after a big fight...ahh, Moonshade's just sitting on her ass right now while Mutsumi does all the work." Moonshade suddenly pops through the connection. "Moonshade, help Beowulf file a report on the Nanobots, okay?" Windir> Moonshade says, "Morgy, what the hell did you do THAT for?" Windir> Beowulf blinks. "Ah... I see. Moonshade? Sorry if you just got shifted here unexpectedly." Windir> Moonshade says, "I don't know jack about those nano thingies. Other than that some moron at Panopticon put them on our boat." Windir> Beowulf hmmms. "Can you tell them what you saw, at least, and what you had to go through to clean them out? And do you remember what they were saying about the nanobots?" Windir> Beowulf asks, "OOC Is Phil still there?" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Phil has gone to bed, but his character is still on Jacqui's ship, if that's what you mean." Windir> Morgenstern says, "I'll feed her the technical aspects." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC I'm trying to remember if Bey's been told that Gabrielle was investigating the nanobots -- oh, never mind." Windir> Beowulf nods. "Good enough." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Will it be, do I think? :)" Windir> You take Moonshade to file the report. With help from you and Morgenstern, she stumbles through the paper work and manages to explain the situation. Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC ANd would this make a good breakpoint? Is about sleeptime here." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Yes, it would." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Oh, and hopefully they've got some form of truth detector to understand that Moonshade's telling the truth, even if she doesn't understand it all. o.o ^_^" Windir> Wakaba says, "It's a reasonably believable story." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Good. :)" Windir> Beowulf asks, "OOC Let's see... Do I think it'd be better if I helped with the investigation, getting a licenced Panoptican P.I. to help, or to just let them handle it? What kind of body language impressions did I get from the clerk when we were discussing the possibility?" Windir> Wakaba says, "The clerk was a little suspicious as to why no one involved in the case had actually reported it when it happened." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Given you're not an expert in nanorobotics, you might be better off hiring a local professional, unless you have an angle on how to use Pattern." Windir> Beowulf asks, "Ah. Didn't really believe my explanation about them still being in transit, so to speak?" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Or your conjuration." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC There's communications through the wormhole." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Most ships would have instantly sent in a report." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Ah, I see. Guess I'm being too paranoid again, since I was worried about sending in a report that might get seen by the folks we're actually looking for." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC IF you're that worried, you'd ave been better off ignoring the government entirely and investigating covertly." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Anyway, was assuming we'd have to hire a professional no matter what, since the clerk said we'd need a licensed one." Windir> Beowulf says, "OOC Well, my original plan was to go to the Castellan and get his permission to investigate covertly, to avoid the problem Kanna had in CAFAM when she completely bypassed the authorities; unfortunately, it got shot down. o.o" Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Well, the problem is that heads of Universities aren't easy to go talk to." Windir> Beowulf says, "Um, the Castellan (presuming we're going by Deadly Assassin) was just the head of security; the Chancellor was the head of the University." Windir> Wakaba says, "OOC Ahh. Heads of Security aren't easy to get to see either. That's why they have layers of servants to screen out the people who otherwise would eat up their time, preventing them doing their jobs." Windir> Beowulf nods. "That's what I was hoping my Navigating Academia, plus my status as a Prince of Amber, would help with. Oh, well. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "Your intent of avoiding trouble with the authorities is good. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "I see Academia as well, applying to Academia, not security." Windir> Beowulf says, "Hey, it's my Alma Mater, dang straight I want to avoid trouble with the authorities. ^_^" Windir> Beowulf says, "I want to be able to come back for reunions, after all. ^_-" Windir> Beowulf says, "Anyway, since I've started with the route through channels, suppose I'd better continue it. And hope no one in on the sabotage has noticed. o.o" Windir> Wakaba says, "I'll be a kind GM and tell you you have not yet tipped your hands to those responsible." Windir> Beowulf kindly apprecates the kind GM. ^_^ Windir> Beowulf hmmms. "If I can get a sample of the nanobot from Gabby, I'm assuming I could conjure a detector that would track them?" Windir> Wakaba says, "Yes, you could." Windir> Beowulf nods. "We'll start with that next session, then, after we hire the investigator; hopefully I can think of some way to use Pattern by then, that won't be disruptive to the university. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "Cool. I can think of a few ideas :)" Windir> Beowulf heh's. "Well, if I can't think of any, Bey might try checking with... say, Aunt Nanami, or... Touga's a Pattern expert, isn't he?" Windir> Wakaba says, "Touga has hundreds of years of Mad Pattern Experience :)" Windir> Beowulf says, "Heh. Hope it won't be cheating to ask him for help, or advice. :)" Windir> Wakaba says, "Perfectly fair." Windir> Beowulf asks, "Good 'nuff. And now, I sleep. Want me to move back to main?" Windir> Wakaba says, "Yes, Please" Windir> Beowulf says, "Right. Good night... :)" Travis Butler tbutler@birch.net ...Cats are the proof of a higher purpose to the universe.
