Oceania: Late 1500s and Early 1600s: The Dutch colonize Indonesia, after a long fight with the locals. Seventeenth century: Various European colonizing efforts in SE Asia fail, French and English fight with the Dutch. Eighteenth century: Japan begins to explore Asian islands, colonizes east coast of Australia. English colonize the western coast as a penal colony. Nineteenth century: Japanese Colonize Vietnam. British effort to colonize 'New Zealand' fails when a local cult discovers magics capable of stopping bullets and defeat British forces. However, the northern half of the main island remains in British hands. Much of Southeastern Asia falls under the control of various European powers. 20th century: New Zealand and Australia gain 'Dominion' status. Specific regions: Australia: Divided between the British Colony of Western Australia and the Japanese Colony of Eastern Australia. The aborigines have largely retreated to the center of the continent and remain few in numbers due to diseases wiping them out in the nineteenth century. Many have fled this world entirely, vanishing into the dreamtime to wait for this plague of Europeans and Japanese to pass. Eastern Australia is divided into 25 small prefectures, each administered by a prefect appointed by the central government back in Japan. Eastern Australia now sends delegates to the Japanese Diet, like the prefectures at home. Most of the population is Japanese descent, but with a fair number of Chinese, Indians and other Asians. This has lead to some problems, since the government hasn't had as much success at convincing native Japanese to immigrate to Australia as had originally been hoped. Western Australia is divided between <>. It is an independent 'Dominion', still theoretically subject to the British Crown and united by a common interest and alliance. The Governor of Australia is is appointed by the Crown, but doesn't hold much power. Indonesia: The Dutch still control this area, though their power is slipping, and a loss of control seems imminent. Many Indonesians are Moslems. The various small chains of Islands: Colonized in a vague sense, though most inhabitants still live as they always have. Some islands now function as coaling stations or airbases. Germany, the Netherlands, Japan, the Dominion of North America, Imperial Russia, France, and the United Kingdom all control various islands. The Republic of Hawaii: Hawaii is an independent republic controlled by Sugar and Pineapple plantation owners (White European and Japanese), who dominate the mostly Japanese and native population. The islands are set up as a parliamentary democracy, and the country is noted for its high levels of political corruption. New Zealand: The northern half of the bigger island is controlled by the British, while the southern half and the smaller island form the "Kingdom of <>", under the control of the locals.
